Anna’s Story Part 67

Pizza Eater

Pizza Eater

There is a woman, Miss K., who has been coming to the shelter teaching us parenting skills. No disrespect to her, but I don’t think she should be telling me how to raise my own kids. I mean that is how I used to think. I’m trying hard to understand how this program works. Some stuff they tell me to do means I have to make big changes in how I do things and I don’t like that. I like to keep things the way they have always been.

For example, Miss K. Keeps on telling me to put my kids on a schedule. I like to just let them sleep and eat whenever they want to. On Wednesday she came by around 11:00 in the morning and both kids and I were still sleeping. She didn’t like that much. She make enough noise to wake us all up. I told her we didn’t get much sleep the night before, but she didn’t seem to care about that. She said it was time for the children to be up and dressed and have something to eat. Well, just getting them dressed was this big deal. She thought they needed to have pants and shirts on. It is summer time and I had already changed both diapers. That wasn’t good enough for her so I added more clothes. I didn’t gripe about the extra laundry since I am practicing my new attitude.

Next she acted like she wasn’t going to leave unit I fed both kids. Noah wanted leftover pizza, but Miss K. Thought I should fix him oatmeal and fruit. Well, he won’t eat oatmeal so he just got fruit for breakfast. I hope she was happy. Oops, bad attitude showing. Well, they are my kids and I do know there are only 3 or 4 things they will eat. Pizza is one of them.

Now that they were up, she wanted me to play with them. I had a text message I wanted to answer, but I decided to go along with Miss K. We got out the blocks and all sat on the floor and built stuff. Noah got out his toy car and played with that too. It was sort of fun.

Then I found out the real reason for her visit. She wants me to sign up for Healthy Start. She says it will help me learn about nutrition and improve my parenting skills. I heard about that program before. I even signed up once before because the shelter made me. When the worker came by, I told her to go away I didn’t need her. I don’t know if anyone ever found out I did  that, but they did figure out the worker is not coming to see me. OK I’ll call Healthy Start again and even talk to the worker when she comes. I told you, I am trying now.
